Be Kind, Rewind – Is Nostalgia What It Used to Be?

Jul 29, 2014

By Dean George

When I was a kid the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas seemed like an eternity. Mom used to say be careful what you wish because the older you get, the faster time goes. As with many things Mom said, she was spot on.

Today in our final post of July, we want to revisit some of our readers’ favorite Agent Straight-Talk posts from the first six months of this year. July?! Geez, my body clock is still adjusting to the time change in March…of 2013! If you learn a tip or two in these posts about maintaining the health of your teeth, great! If the posts make you smile, that’s good too, because smiling is good exercise and sunshine is good for your teeth.

Back in Time

#1 Goldie Lockes ‘Bears’ Down on a Dental Plan
Who doesn't love a good story involving fuzzy bears, a fearless heroine and a fruitful search for a favored dental plan? In April, we shared the story of Goldie Lockes and her efforts at finding an affordable dental plan in the dark woods of the Internet forest. To see what she brought to bear in her search for a dental plan that was ‘just right,’ you’ll want to read this post.

# 2 Effective Dates and Waiting Periods In January Felicia explained how effective dates affect access to dentists when using a dental plan. And there was no waiting on her explanation about why plans have waiting periods. But are the plans with waiting periods worth the wait and how can you avoid becoming disaffected with your dental plan effective date? For answers, read on…

#3 These Dental Plans Can Be One Sweet Ride How would you explain a dental plan that has no waiting periods, no deductibles and no annual limits but isn't really dental insurance? To a pair of dental insurance cops my explanation about discount dental plans sounded too good to be true, but that didn’t stop me from making the case for how well they work and how they save money.  Refusing to wilt under intense questioning, read how we declined taking the 5th amendment, waived our right to a court-appointed defender and won the begrudging respect of two jaded guys that thought they had seen it all.

# 4 The Tooth Fairy, Larry & The Rock To commemorate National Tooth Fairy Day and help separate fact from fiction, in February we did a hard hitting expose on the Tooth Fairy. Just a few questions we answered in the post were: Why is there a Tooth Fairy? Does the Tooth Fairy really look like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson or Larry the Cable Guy? What the heck does the Tooth Fairy do with all those teeth?! And who is Ratoncito Perez and La Petite Souris?

#5 Hide & Seek Isn’t Fun When Playing with Dental Plans Children love playing games like hide & seek and tag, but adults - not so much. When adults think of hide and seek they imagine fine print, disclaimers, hidden costs or hiding from overdue bills until they see their next paycheck. In June, Felicia shared some terrific tips on how to recognize unexpected dental plan costs like one time or annual fees, dental procedures that may cost extra, and how costs for treatments like dental crowns can vary depending upon the materials used. No one likes unexpected insurance surprises, but reading this will help you know what to look for before buying a plan so…tag – you’re it!

#6 Enamored with Enamel In March we looked at the miracle of tooth enamel, the importance of taking care of it and how to look for signs of damaged enamel. What’s so miraculous about tooth enamel? You mean other than it’s considered the hardest substance in the human body and that it forms before teeth even erupt in your mouth? Unfortunately this “tooth tough guy” is very susceptible to many of the foods and drinks consumed today so if you missed this post the first time, here’s your chance for tooth enamel redemption!

4 Tips to Save the Most Money

1. Preventive Care

Make sure you’re taking advantage of regular periodic preventive checkups based on your dentist’s recommendation. Those diagnostic procedures, cleanings and scalings, etc., will prevent small problems from developing into bigger, more expensive and harder to treat problems later...

Help for Young Dentists

June 4, 2020

The one constant during the COVID pandemic has been uncertainty, and that anxiety has been especially acute among dentists just beginning their careers.

“Newbie” dentists have been especially vulnerable to the shutdown due to student debt and the lack of resources available to those dentists as compared to those with returning patients and a few years of practical experience.

What two oral health companies are doing to help.
